5 Federal States Join FORCES TO PROMOTE A GREEN HYDROGEN ECONOMY
The economic development organisations of the northern German states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein have joined forces to form the green hydrogen initiative HY-5. The new initiative aims to make Northern Germany the strongest future region for green hydrogen in the heart of Europe and to develop and complete the value chain for green hydrogen. Together, the federal states want to help establish Northern Germany as a hotspot on the European hydrogen map.

Key Facts
Northern Germany -
numerous advantages as as business location
We produce more green energy than we can currently use
Up to now, this renewable energy cannot be stored adequately. With the production of green hydrogen, energy sources that previously could not be fed into the electricity grid can be saved and used in the long term.
By 2030: Hydrogen power plants with an electrolysis capacity of 5 gigawatts
Green hydrogen is already being produced locally in various projects. The planned mega-electrolyser with 100 KW capacity in Hamburg-Moorburg will set a new milestone as of 2025.
Industrial Customers benefit from a short haul infrastructure
The industry, in particular, can benefit from green hydrogen to achieve its decarbonisation goals. Our regional infrastructure offers the best conditions for this.
Seaports and Import terminals
Efficient ports in all federal states, terminals for import and export as well as the connection to existing gas grids ensure the future-proof supply of hydrogen.
Storage and
Gas Grids
The geological conditions in the North German lowlands are unique in Europe and ideally suited for the large-volume intermediate storage of hydrogen in caverns.
Funding Programs
and political momentum
Extensive expert knowledge on the topic of renewable energies meets a strong political will to build an economically viable green hydrogen economy based on the national hydrogen strategy.
